SPECIAL FOOD

The sinhala and Hindu New Year has a special food.It is milk rice.The milk rice is made with rice and coconut milk or cow's milk.Most people in sri lanka love milk rice.People eat milk rice with different things.Some make a spicy onion-chillie sambal.Others eat it with treacle or juggery.People make a lot of traditional sweets for the New Year.Some of them are kuwum, kokis,athiraha,and asmee.Bananas are a must on the New Year table.
            Easter too has its special foods.Easter eggs and Easter Bunnies are very populer with children.Easter eggs are made out of chocolate and butter cream.The out side is hard and is often painted.you can buy one Easter egg,several Easter eggs or a box of Easter eggs.They are good as presents.Easter eggs and Easter bunnies tell us about spring,They mean new life.
            April is beautiful month.You can see fiowering trees everywhere.Pretty bird sing.The singing of the 'koha' is loud and clear during this season.The koha and the cuckoo bird sing about 'the spring'-new life.New year time is a happy time.

A RELIGIOUS FESTIVAL

   August is a important month.The Kandy 'perahera' is held in august.This procession is held for days.Lots of people come to see the perahera.It is very beautiful.There are many elephant in the perahera.There are dressed beautifully in clothes  of different designs and colours.The whip crackers announce the arrival of the perahera.They are followed by colourfully dressed dancers,drummers,tom-tom beaters,flag bearers and stile walkers.The torch bearers illuminate the path of the procession.
          The Kandy perahera is a religious festival.The Buddha's tooth relic is taken in the perahera. The place where the tooth relic is kept is called the 'dalada Maligawa'.The 'Diyawadana Nilame'is the guardian of the Dalada Maligawa and is an important person in the processing.The procession of the four devalas,Vishnu,Natha,Katharagama and Pattini join the Kandy perahera.
          Every year the tooth relic is taken out for the perahera.Only the Maligawa elephant will carry the beautifully decoratad erlic casket.He kneels and the casket is kept on his back.Then he walks very majestically in the procession.People young and old gather in thousands to see the perahera.

A MONTH OF FESTIVALS


         April is month of festivals.The sinhalese and the hindus celebrate the new year.The new year is generally on the 13th or 14th of april.The new year is national festival.The sinhalese and the hindus celebrate it in different ways.
         The catholics and the christians celebrate Easter.Easter is on a sunday.The friday before Easter is good friday.Easter and Good friday are important religious days.Som times the Muslims too celebrate a day in mid-april.muslim festivals do not always come on the same day.The muslimsfollow the lunar calender.
          The new year festival has very special customs.On this day Sinhalese and the hundus light the hearth at an auspicious time.They also take their New Year meals at an auspicious time. This is very special day to Sinhalese and Hundus.

HOME

Sri Lanka is a republic and a unitary state which is governed by a semi-presidential system with its official seat of government in Sri Jayawardenapura-Kotte, the capital.

As a result of its location in the path of major sea routes, Sri Lanka is a strategic naval link between West Asia and South East Asia.It has also been a center of the Buddhist religion and culture from ancient times and is one of the few remaining abodes of Buddhism in South Asia along with Ladakh, Bhutan and the Chittagong hill tract The Sinhalese community forms the majority of the population; Tamils, who are concentrated in the north and east of the island, form the largest ethnic minority. Other communities include Moors, Burghers, Kaffirs, Malays and the aboriginal Vedda people.

The country is famous for the production and export of tea, coffee, coconuts, rubber and cinnamon, the latter which is native to the country. The natural beauty Sri Lanka has led to the title The Pearl of the Indian Ocean, it is full of lush tropical forests, white beaches and diverse landscape throughout along with a rich biodiversity. The country lays claim to a long and colorful history of over three thousand years, having one of the longest documented histories in the world. Sri Lanka's rich culture can be attributed to the many different communities in the island. Sri Lanka is a founding member state of SAARC and a member United Nations, Commonwealth of Nations, G77 and Non-Aligned Movement.
